Taking your family on all-inclusive vacations to Mexico is definitely exciting, but when visiting a country with such a rich culture and history, deciding which landmarks to add to your itinerary can sometimes be a little overwhelming. To help you out we’ve compiled a list of five of our favourite historic sites in Mexico that you definitely won’t want to miss out on.
Mexico’s largest Mayan city and one of its most popular tourist destinations is home to many impressive architectural structures, with its most recognizable being the famous pyramid El Castillo. Chichen Itza is among the new Seven Wonders of the World (contemporary additions to the ancient Seven Wonders laid out in the Classical Era), which makes paying it a visit a staple on any bucket list.
The ruins of this ancient city lie only 50 kilometers northeast of Mexico City. Teotihuacan was once one of the largest cities in the world, and much of its extraordinary architecture is still standing. It hosts the Pyramid of the Sun, the largest pyramid in Mexico, as well as the Pyramid of the Moon and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl. There is so much to see here that one visit just might not be enough.
If you’re a fan of art or architecture, you’ll love the Catedral Metropolitana. Built between 1567 and 1788, its architecture is a unique fusion of baroque, neoclassic and Mexican churrigueresque. Inside there is an impressive art collection, and below is a network of catacombs. Both the largest and oldest cathedral in Latin America, it is located in the central plaza of Mexico City, making it easily accessible to anyone wishing to visit.
The archeological site in Tulum stands out as the only coastal Mayan city. The port city was once protected by a wall and the ruins are located right on the shore of the Caribbean Sea. Not only are the ruins fascinating, but the beach is incredibly beautiful. All in all, it makes for a breathtaking and unforgettable experience.
This small Mayan city appeals to those who love nature as well as history. Palenque is found in the jungle, where you’ll see many natural wonders. The city itself boasts extraordinary architecture and many beautiful sculptures. Located on this site is the Temple of Inscriptions, the only Mayan funerary monument that has been discovered to date.
